Your Child Has Been Asked to Leave Before - Here's What's Different at Flip for Function
If you're reading this, I'm guessing your child has been asked to leave a program before.
Maybe it was gymnastics. Maybe it was soccer, dance, swimming, or preschool. Maybe you've heard phrases like "not ready for group settings" or "maybe try again next year."
And I'm guessing you're carrying some worry about whether it might happen again.
I want you to know something important: At Flip for Function, we don't ask families to leave. We help you find the right level of support for your child - and we have multiple options to choose from.
Sometimes that means starting in a different place than you originally imagined. Sometimes it means building up gradually to what you envisioned. But it never means "your child doesn't belong here."
Let me show you how we approach this - and why finding the right fit looks different at Flip for Function!
How We Think About Supporting Kids
We built Flip for Function around a simple belief: kids need different levels of support at different times in their development. That's not a problem to solve - it's just how growth works.
So instead of having one program that kids either fit into or don't, we created multiple pathways. Think of them like different entry points to the same community: you can start where your child is ready and move between levels as they grow and develop.
Here's what our support levels look like:
Our Levels of Support
Level 1: Private 1:1 Sessions
30 or 55 minutes, 1:1 with an OT or trained coach
Fully individualized attention
Best for: Building foundation skills, working on specific goals, kids not yet ready for group dynamics, or kids who prefer learning in a 1:1 environment
Level 2: Small Group Classes (4-6 kids, 2 coaches)
Structured class with built-in individualization
Smaller ratios for more support
Best for: Kids ready for peer interaction with medium to high levels of support
Level 3: Camps
Multi-hour programming with group activities
Small ratios: 1:3/4 kids
More independence required
Best for: Kids who can handle longer duration and more transitions
Level 4: Parents' Night Out Events
Drop-off programming in a fun, less structured environment
Least intensive support
Best for: Kids who can mostly self-regulate and navigate group dynamics independently or with moderate support
The key: You don't have to start at Level 4. You start where your child is ready.
How We Partner With You to Find the Right Fit
Here's what's really different about our approach: we watch, we communicate, and we problem-solve together.
We observe patterns:
Is your child able to regulate enough to engage and learn?
Do they feel safe (and are others safe)?
Are they making progress, even if it's in small increments?
Is this environment supporting their nervous system and development?
When we notice something isn't quite working, we start a conversation, not an exit plan:
You won’t get a surprise "this isn't working out" conversation. Instead, we reach out early to talk about what we're seeing and brainstorm solutions together.
That conversation might sound like:
"Camp has been a lot for her - what if we tried small group classes first? I think she'd build confidence there and camp would feel easier down the road."
"He's doing great in group! I'm wondering if adding a monthly 1:1 session would help us really dial in on [specific goal]."
"She's really ready for more! I think she'd love camp; want to give it a try?"
"For camp to work well for him, he needs more 1:1 support than we can provide with our current ratios. You're welcome to bring a support person with you (you'd cover that cost), or we can add that service through us."
See the theme? We're finding solutions together, not handing you a decision we made without you.
We're thoughtful about placement because we want every child to feel successful and confident.
Being thoughtful about where to start doesn't mean "you don't belong here." It means "let's find where you'll thrive."
In the very rare situations where we truly don't have the resources to best serve a family, we don't just close the door; we help families find resources and programs that might be a better match for what they're looking for.
Why This Approach Works So Well
For your child: They get to start where they can be successful and build confidence. No one is setting them up to fail in a program they're not quite ready for yet. They grow at their own pace with support that matches their needs.
For your family: You don't have to start over somewhere new every time something doesn't work. You stay connected to us, and our coaches get to really know your child over time. Those relationships matter.
For the other families in classes: Everyone gets an environment that works for them because we're thoughtful about readiness and support levels. Kids aren't struggling in programs that aren't quite right yet.
For our program: We can genuinely serve more kids with different needs because we built the flexibility into our model from the start. It's not an accommodation; it's how we designed things.
Questions You Might Be Wondering
"What if we try small group and it still doesn't seem like the right fit?"
Then we keep working on it together! Maybe 1:1 sessions for a while to build specific skills. Maybe a different class time with different group dynamics. Maybe we need to adjust our approach or try new strategies. The point is, we stay in communication and keep problem solving together until we find what works for your child.
"How will I know if you think we need to change programs?"
You'll know because we'll tell you; early and honestly. If we're noticing patterns or thinking another level might serve your child better, we'll start that conversation with you right away. We believe in transparent, collaborative communication.
"What if cost is keeping us from the level of support my child needs?"
Please talk with us about that. Sometimes we can get creative with scheduling. Sometimes we can adjust our approach temporarily. Sometimes it's about creating a realistic timeline to work toward your goal. Financial constraints don't automatically mean you can't participate; it means we need to have an honest conversation and explore what's possible together.
What Parents Experience
"My 5 year old autistic son loves this place! Traditional Gymnastics did not work for us But this place adapts to his needs, and it’s structured without feeling too rigid, and he’s learning gymnastics, which is great for his motor skills and movement. The staff is fantastic And I look forward to coming every week and hanging out with the other parents. Such a good experience!”
"Flip for Function is amazing! We have struggled to find summer camps and activities for our active, energetic son with autism. Flip for function delivered above and beyond - he loved going to camp every day and made new friends. Chasity and her team do an incredible job creating an engaging, inclusive and kind environment for fun and learning for children of all abilities. I am so grateful and we will be back!"
"My daughter came to Flip for Function after struggling in our local recreational gymnastics program due to difficulties with impulse control and focus. She has been thriving in her individual sessions with Mariah. I immediately noticed how in-tuned to her needs Mariah was and it was such a relief. I love that she is able to work on her body awareness and self esteem in such an affirming environment"
